The RN Informatics Team Member plays a critical role in optimizing and supporting the Epic EHR (Electronic Health Record) system. This position combines clinical nursing expertise with information technology skills to ensure Epic applications meet the needs of clinical staff, improve patient care, and enhance healthcare operations. Under the direct supervision of the IT Applications Manager, the RN Informatics Team Member will collaborate closely with clinicians, IT teams, and Epic support staff to improve workflows, ensure system functionality, and provide end-user support. This role is ideal for a clinically experienced registered nurse (RN) with a keen interest in healthcare informatics and a strong understanding of EHR systems, specifically Epic.

The RN Informatics Team Member will participate in the design, configuration, testing, and ongoing optimization of Epic EHR modules, ensuring they align with clinical needs and operational goals.

Essential Job Functions

• Supports, configures, builds, tests, implements, and optimizes Epic applications and clinical workflows to meet operational and patient care needs.
• Uses clinical knowledge and Epic expertise to evaluate workflows, identify opportunities for improvement, and develop solutions that support safe and effective patient care.
• Performs Epic application build and configuration within assigned applications, including clinical documentation, orders, workflows, decision support, and other functionality within the scope of the analyst's Epic certifications and responsibilities.
• Collaborates with clinical staff, providers, operational leaders, IT teams, and the Epic Community Connect host to translate clinical and operational needs into effective Epic solutions.
• Serves as a subject matter expert and escalation resource for clinical Epic workflows, application functionality, and complex end-user issues.
• Evaluates requests for Epic enhancements and workflow changes, identifies potential impacts and dependencies, and assists with developing appropriate solutions.
• Participates in Epic projects, upgrades, enhancements, implementations, and optimization initiatives, including planning, build, testing, validation, implementation, and post-go-live support.
• Performs system, workflow, regression, and integration testing to validate new functionality and confirm clinical and operational requirements are met prior to implementation.
• Troubleshoots Epic application and workflow issues, identifies root causes, and collaborates with internal IT teams, Epic resources, the Community Connect host, and operational stakeholders to resolve issues.
• Provides clinical end-user support through rounding, workflow observation, troubleshooting, optimization, and at-the-elbow assistance as needed.
• Partners with Epic Trainers to identify education and knowledge gaps and develop appropriate training, communication, and support strategies for clinical end users.
• Collaborates with Epic Trainers during new implementations, upgrades, workflow changes, provider onboarding, and other initiatives requiring coordinated application and education support.
• Serves as a change champion for new Epic functionality, clinical workflow changes, implementations, and optimization efforts and supports end-user adoption.
• Facilitates communication between clinical operations, IT, and application support teams regarding system issues, enhancement requests, workflow concerns, project status, and implementation activities.
• Identifies system design concerns, workflow gaps, risks, dependencies, and decision points and escalates them to the appropriate operational, clinical, or IT leadership.
• Maintains accurate documentation of Epic build, system changes, testing, workflow decisions, issues, resolutions, and implementation activities according to established change management and documentation standards.
• Develops and maintains application and workflow documentation and shares knowledge with analysts, trainers, clinical teams, and other stakeholders.
• Maintains required Epic certifications and develops knowledge of assigned Epic applications, clinical workflows, healthcare technology, and industry best practices.
• Maintains awareness of regulatory, compliance, patient safety, and organizational requirements that may affect Epic configuration and clinical workflows.
• Participates in on-call or after-hours application support as assigned.
• Supports the organization's mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures and performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education Required: Active Registered Nurse (RN) license. At least 2 years of clinical nursing experience in a hospital or healthcare setting.

Preferred: BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing)

Licenses/certifications/registrations Required:

• Current RN Oregon licensure.
• Current Epic certification or accreditation in at least one application relevant to assigned responsibilities or ability to obtain required Epic certification within six months of hire.
• Must maintain required Epic certification(s) and complete continuing Epic education requirements throughout employment.

Preferred:

• Certification in Nursing Informatics (e.g., through HIMSS or ANCC).
• Additional Epic certifications depending on the role.

Experience Required: A minimum of five (5) years relevant work experience in a healthcare system. A minimum of three (3) years' experience utilizing and/or supporting Epic applications. Experience with Epic EHR system.

Preferred: Experience in nursing informatics or clinical informatics position is a plus. Ability to support clinical workflows across both inpatient and ambulatory settings, including Primary Care and Specialty Care. Prior Epic or other clinical information system design, build, implementation, or optimization experience preferred.

Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet time-sensitive deadlines. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with clinical, operational, training, and technical teams. Positive attitude, strong teamwork mindset, and willingness to assist in areas outside of primary responsibilities when needed. Ability to participate in after-hours or on-call application support as assigned.

Physical Requirements: Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Occasional walking, standing, bending, or lifting light office items (up to 25 pounds). Visual acuity to view computer screens and read detailed financial documents. Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and electronically. May be required to move throughout the healthcare facility, including administrative and clinical areas.

Working Conditions: This position operates in a professional office setting within a healthcare facility. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. The office environment is climate-controlled, well-lit, and ergonomically designed for extended computer work. While this role is primarily office-based and does not involve direct patient care, the employee may occasionally be present in clinical areas or interact with staff working in clinical environments. As such, there is a potential for exposure to infectious diseases. The organization provides appropriate training and personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed to ensure safety.
